Mountain Hosts are National Ski Patrol members that provide knowledge to the public about the ski area and skiing in general. They are trained to provide basic first aid until ski patrollers arrive.
Outdoor First Care (OFC) for Mountain Hosts
OFC Description - OFC is the NSP’s course designed for those interested in serving as Mountain Hosts at ski areas and others who need an entry-level first aid course. The course is offered through local patrols. It includes content knowledge and hands-on skills training and evaluation.
Participants earn a two-year certification. The current national course fee is $25. There is no refresher requirement for this course (however Ski Apache Ski Patrol strongly recommends you participate in the Patrol refresher each year); renewal courses are offered with no national course fee.
OFC Candidate Requirements
1. Completion of a basic (lay person or non-healthcare provider) CPR/AED course provided by the American Red Cross OR American Heart Association (AHA) Heartsaver/AED course OR the National Safety Council. The course taken must include instruction on the AED.
2. Completion of the OFC online program with the written 25-question evaluation (80% is required to pass). Certificate of completion must be presented prior to taking the hands-on part of the course.
3. Completion of a practical "hands-on day." Training modules are provided for hands-on practice. At the end of this day, there is another written 25- question evaluation (80% required to pass) and a "hands-on" scenario for each candidate, to be evaluated by an OEC instructor.
